Steel Ball Manufacturing Process

Raw Material Selection

Cold Heading

The steel wire or rod is cut to the desired length and then cold-headed into rough ball shapes. This process involves feeding the wire into a machine, which shears it to the right length and then uses dies and punches to form it into a spherical shape.

Flash Removal

The next step is to remove the flash line from the ball blanks. This is typically done through a process called flashing, where the balls are placed in a machine that rolls them between two hard alloy plates, removing the excess material and beginning to smooth the surface.

Heat Treatment

The ball blanks are heat treated to enhance their mechanical and hardness qualities. They must be heated to a precise temperature, held there for a predetermined amount of time, and then quenched in a cooling liquid. The balls may also be tempered after quenching to increase their toughness and decrease their brittleness.

Hard Grinding

The balls are ground to remove any surface flaws and to the required diameter and roundness following heat treatment. This is accomplished by sandwiching the balls between two precisely ground, extremely hard discs or plates that rotate in opposing directions.
